Foundation grants help public and nonprofit building owners incorporate energy efficient features into the design of new and remodeled facilities to reduce energy consumption and operating costs throughout the buildings' lifetime. Green design features can be as simple as increasing the use of natural light with well-positioned windows, tapping into natural underground heat sources or specifying efficient systems and materials. At the end of 2011, over 40 Foundation grantees have been awarded LEED certification at varying levels by the United States Green Building Council.
The Foundation's support for green buildings extends to three program areas:
- High Performance Green Buildings. Design & Commissioning and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Capital Systems to Support LEED Certification
- New Incentive Structure and Funding Levels for 2012
- Design and Commissioning to Support LEED Certification at the minimum level of Silver
- New Incentive Structure and Funding Levels for 2012
- Existing Building Energy Efficiency Improvements (LEED certification not required)
