- What types of organizations are eligible for funding?
-
Federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit organizations , state and local government agencies. The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or for-profit businesses.
- What are the application deadlines?
-
Letters of Inquiry are accepted on January 20 and July 20. Within a week of receiving your Letter of Inquiry, the Foundation will notify you of receipt by e-mail.
- How long does the application process take?
-
From the time a Letter of Inquiry is received, to the time an award is made, it typically takes four to four and a half months. The grant-making process may take longer for Land Acquisition requests of $1 million or more.
- May I contact the Foundation with a Natural Areas project idea?
-
Yes. Informal contact with the Foundation staff is encouraged early on in the development of your project for clarification on guidelines and priorities of the three Natural Areas Funding Categories. Keep in mind that sometimes it is difficult for staff to respond to ideas without reviewing a specific proposal and that all funding decisions are made by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Contact Natural Areas Program Officer, Jolie Krasinski at (312) 372-5191 or jkrasinski@illinoiscleanenergy.org. Letters of Inquiry are required of all projects.
- Can I submit my application materials via e-mail?
-
Yes. You can fill out the application forms on-line.

- Can I still apply for a restoration grant?
-
No. The Foundation has not award grants under this program since 2002. For 2011 only, the Foundation will consider land acquisition requests which include a limited amount of support for one-time restoration expenses associated with ensuring that land to-be-acquired and in need of some habitat restoration is restored to a natural condition and open for public enjoyment and education sooner rather than later. Applicants who are invited to submit a full proposal will be given more detailed information. Foundation support cannot be used for the remediation of contaminated properties.
- How much support should I apply for?
-
Ask for sufficient resources to complete the project effectively but keep in mind that the Foundation prefers not to be the sole funder of any given project. Your Letter of Inquiry should explain your organization’s financial situation and describe its efforts to secure funding from other sources. As a guide for Land Acquisition projects, the Foundation will consider requests for support up to 70% of the total budget. The Foundation makes a limited number of awards to Land Acquisition projects at the level of $1 million and above. See the guidelines and criteria for these types of requests.
Capacity Building requests should not exceed $40,000.
